What Is a Review Article?

Fundamentally, the review paper is an essay. It has similarities to the essays you and I have been writing since junior high school: It has a topic, a beginning, development of the theme in a logical manner, and an ending. Some may say that the review  paper is not an original publication and that it is merely a reor- ganization of known facts and hence is not new knowledge.

I understand the “not-original” viewpoint, especially if held by a research scientist. It is true that review papers add no new data to the literature.

However, I believe that review articles are original in that they bring innovative thinking to the readers.

They provide us with practical insights and offer new approaches to old problems. In this way they are innovative, and they expand medical understanding...
